New Mac envy
Posted by steve in technology on July 1st, 2009
My MacBook Pro (early 2008 version) is dead. Push the power button, no happy sound, black screen, tears in my eyes dead. Fortunately it has full AppleCare on it still, so it will be repaired or replaced for me. Which is fine.
I’m suffering from a horrible case of new computer-itis though. Really my pain is that I want to get a server set up at home, but the only spare Mac I have laying about is a G5, which won’t be supported by Snow Leopard – so it’s a dead end. If I was a PC guy I would slap together a crappy machine out of spare parts and use that – and get the performance and reliability I would deserve from such a cavalier approach. But since I want it to be a Mac (and therefore get all of the awesomesauce that comes from having a Mac Server around), I’m stuck.
The cheapest approach would be to use my 20″ iMac – which will at least run Snow Leopard – and I would still be able to use it as a computer, but that conflicts with my desire to do SOMETHING with that G5 other than use it to hold up my Uverse router.
Of course, I can’t afford to actually spend the money on any of this, so it’s mostly academic…
Halfway done, 2009

It’s June 30th. We’re halfway through the year. It seems like just a few days ago I was wondering how in the heck I was going to make it through two more years of school, and now there’s only 18 months left. The kids just turned 6 & 8, and now they are suddenly 7 & 9.
Overall I suppose it’s a good thing that time is flying by – there are certain parts of life that are moving far too slowly for my liking right now. But it still feels odd sometimes.
